As Climate and Sustainability Lead with Mach49’s Venture Investing practice, Mark closely guides companies as they look to expand their external venturing activities, particularly helping them to develop net-zero strategies and understand how partnerships, investments, and acquisitions can help them achieve their net-zero goals. His expertise spans crafting investment theses, scouting potential deals, and integrating new acquisitions into existing portfolios, but his work isn’t just about numbers. It’s about reshaping the future of industries — one sustainable venture at a time.

Before joining Mach49, Mark spent 15 years at Shell. Despite being faced with the opportunity for a promotion, Mark instead chose to join the business’ new global innovation team, hoping to finally have the chance to unleash his entrepreneurial spirit and create real, long-term impact. As one of the team’s first employees and the San Francisco Incubation Lead, Mark developed new solutions to bolster Shell’s sustainability services, launched a series of digital products, and brokered over 60 corporate partnerships.

Mark also had a tenure in Shell’s Decarbonisation Business, acting as General Manager for the mining sector. There, his team successfully launched a fully integrated electrification solution for mining haul trucks and a carbon capture technology solution for metal producers, and developed integrated decarbonization solutions like biofuels, hydrogen, and renewable power.

It’s no surprise Mark found an ideal home in Mach49, where his educational background — including a PhD in entrepreneurship from Queen’s University, Belfast — and industry knowledge meet as he forces established corporations to challenge the status quo. He personifies Mach49’s mission — to change the cultures of large organizations, cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit within them, and transform them into agents of sustainable growth.

Mark also emulates Mach49’s values in every other facet of his life, being passionate about being a global citizen and about giving back. Having recently moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, Mark plans to visit every country in South America before returning to London, adding to the list of 70+ countries he’s already traveled to. When he’s not volunteering by teaching local kids English and fundraising for school facilities, Mark spends his free time immersing in the culture at theaters, museums, and concerts.

And when he needs to let off steam, you can find him in the gym doing Crossfit.
