Mark Hannan
Climate and Sustainability Lead

As Climate and Sustainability Lead within Mach49’s Venture Investing practice, Mark works closely with companies as they look to expand their external venturing activities, particularly helping them to develop net-zero strategies and understand how partnerships, investments, and acquisitions can help them achieve their net-zero goals. His expertise spans developing investment theses, deal scouting and negotiating, and portfolio integration within existing assets and operations.

Prior to joining Mach49, Mark spent 15 years at Shell. He was one of the first employees on Shell’s global innovation team, acting as the incubation lead in San Francisco responsible for building new solutions to enable the company to provide sustainability services to their B2B and B2C customers. As part of this work, he launched several digital products and forged partnerships with over 60 companies.

He also served as General Manager for Mining in Shell’s Sectors & Decarbonisation Business, where he was responsible for decarbonization pathways in the mining sector and led the team that developed integrated decarbonization solutions, including biofuels, hydrogen, and renewables power. Most significantly, his team built and launched a fully integrated electrification solution for mining haul trucks as well as a carbon capture technology solution for zinc, nickel, and aluminum producers.

Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in management and a PhD in entrepreneurship from Queen’s University, Belfast.
