Senior Customer Experience/UX Researcher

Menlo Park, CA
Who We Are / About Us

Mach49 works with Global 1000 companies to build and launch new disruptive businesses. To do this, we work side-by-side with intrapreneurial teams to go from an idea (market or product concept) through customer validation, solution ideation, and prototype testing to building a fully-formed business that the teams can launch.  We work with the teams to instill lean startup, design-thinking, and agile development mindsets as they build out their businesses. Our process is highly customer-centric, relying on customer design research as a linchpin of our overall methodology. Still interested? Good!

The Role

Here’s who we’re looking for: The role of the Senior Customer Experience/UX Researcher helps client teams conceive, test, and build new disruptive products by combining work from multiple disciplines: User Research, Usability, Design Thinking and Design.

Responsibilities
You also provide a senior-level customer experience presence across client teams with the following competencies in mind:
  • Train client teams in the Customer Experience Research process in a dynamic, energetic, rapidly changing environment
  • Help develop testing strategies and logistics for entrepreneurial teams. Aside from formal training, this entails:
  • Helping teams write interview scripts based on templates to match the testing strategy
  • Training teams to adapt their own scripts, providing real-time feedback and coaching on script-writing and interviewing
  • Demonstrating and coaching teams on conducting various forms of interviews with customers
  • Creating hand-drawn storyboards and QAing other team members storyboards to be used in testing
  • Directing and working with designers on low-to-high resolution designs to be used in testing
  • Training teams and coaching on all aspects of customer development
Requirements
  • Train and provide quality assurance for Customer Experience Research Specialists (both client and Mach49)
  • Present to and host workshops for client teams of all sizes
  • Help to provide thought leadership on the Mach49 Customer Experience Research methodology. Pilot and test new tactics where appropriate and incorporate these into our methodology to ensure Mach49’s customer development is industry-leading.
  • Collaborate within the Customer Experience Research team, with the client teams, with the larger Mach49 team, and with our many partners and outside collaborators
  • Complete required administrative tasks on time and accurately
Work Experience
  • 5+ years work experience
  • Demonstrated experience applying customer research methods in service of conceiving, validating and building a product
  • Understanding of pros and cons of a variety of experimental methods (with an emphasis on qualitative research)
  • Comfort within a fast-paced, collaborative environment with client teams who are often initially uncomfortable with ambiguity
  • Political savvy when working with clients
  • Skilled at knowing when to lead versus when to collaborate
  • Comfort learning and working within the current Mach49 Experience Research process.  There is room to add new approaches and philosophies, as they make sense
  • Curious mind and the ability to naturally make connections between diverse fields and industries
  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced, multi-task environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of organizations
  • Persuasive written and oral communication style
  • Previous experience within a start-up company is a plus
